July 2013 Favorites!

Happy Wednesday KorKers!

I hope you’ve had a great week! Mine’s been pretty interesting yet lazy simultaneously due to the great amounts of rainfall that North Carolina has received, causing flash floods and mucky conditions for anyone who has to venture outside. Yuck. I'm also getting ready to start my last year of college- WHOA, how time does fly!
So, it’s that time of the month again…it’s time to share with you, my amazing readers, my favorites for the month of July! (And cue loud cheering from the crowd…haha!) And for this month’s favorites, I have a few new ones, including my favorite YouTubers/YouTube Channel and YouTube video currently.

LET’S GET STARTED, SHALL WE?

Favorite Summer Staple Beauty Product: Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
Image Credit: Burt's Bees Official Website
Burts’ Bees is an American personal care product company based in Durham, NC, that creates Earth friendly and natural body products. Their products range from lotions, sun care products, and one of their best sellers, lip balm. Since the company is based in North Carolina, their products are sold at almost every place you go to, including my College’s bookstore. I recently received a new tube of lip balm while I was working at a camp as a counselor where Burt’s Bees was a large sponsor of the program. (Thanks Burt’s Bees!) The lip balm itself is wonderful. It glides on smoothly onto your lips and the Vitamin E and peppermint oil combination inside the balm makes your lips incredibly soft and kissable. (Not to mention, peppermint smells so good!) This lip balm is now a constant product that I carry around in my pocket.

Favorite Summer Staple Beauty Accessory: Bow Hair Clips!
Summer’s one of the many times of the year in which you can always add a splash of color into an outfit.  In my case, I love adding a bow hair clip into my hair to do so! While I was on vacation with my family, we decided to escape the heat and go shopping for a little bit at one of the local malls, where I found several adorable hair clips- a pair of golden sparrow clips as well as lace bow clips. Since purchasing them, when I usually wear a simplistic outfit of shorts and a solid shirt, I just add in a bow hair clip into my hair, and WHAM- color. It’s just that simple, and it’s a little girly too.

Favorite Song (At The Moment): “Wasting All These Tears” by Cassadee Pope

(Note: All Rights to Cassadee Pope and her music belong to their respected and rightful owners.
I don't own it!)

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Cassadee Pope from her start in her band, Hey Monday, through her journey on NBC’s ‘The Voice’, up through now. With her new single “Wasting All These Tears” being her launch into the Country Music world, I couldn’t be happier. The song is incredibly catchy, and highly relatable, which makes it a double threat. Needless to say, I’ve been singing it relentlessly and listening to it on repeat. I’m incredibly excited to hear the rest of her album! Great Job Cassadee!

Favorite YouTube Channel (For The Month): CTFxC (Internet Killed Television)

Gosh, I have to tell you, I watch YouTube everyday and with that, I am subscribed to almost seventy channels. Yep, almost 70, ranging from musicians to comedians to gamers; which is quite an interesting mix. So, trying to choose just one for my favorite YouTube channel for this month is a bit difficult. But if I had to pick one for this month, I would have to go with CTFxC. You’re probably wondering, “what?”, but let me explain.

CTFxC is a YouTube Channel owned and ran by Charles and Alli Trippy and where they post daily vlogs about their lives. They’re not boring and lame vlogs though- Charles is the bassist for the band We The Kings (which I talked about in my June favorites), and between him and Alli, you get to see what it’s like to go on tour with the band and what the life of a YouTuber is like as they vlog about big events like VidCon to the normal hilarity of a typical day with their dogs, Zoey and Marley. (Fun Fact: they've been posting vlogs everyday for more than five years now. FIVE WHOLE YEARS! That's quite a feat!)

They’re all absolutely fantastic and hilarious, and since they post everyday, you don’t miss out! As a fan of the channel, I have to say, CTFxC FTW!

Favorite Song/YouTube Video (At The Moment): “Miss Jackson” ft. Lolo- Panic! At The Disco

(Note: All rights to Panic! At The Disco and their music belong to their respected and rightful owners.
I don't own it!)

This month announced quite a lot of news for some of my favorite bands, but the release of a new single by Panic! At The Disco topped my list. It’s been more than a year or so since Panic!’s last album was released, and during that time, Panic!’s singer Brendan Urie got married, the band toured the country, and recorded new tracks for their upcoming album ‘Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!’ In preparation for ‘Too Weird…’ Panic!’s single “Miss Jackson” still has the certified flair that belongs to Panic!, yet the style and sound is incredibly similar to that of the band Fall Out Boy. Also, the video is visually well done and makes you think, like many of their past music videos including 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa'. I’m super excited to hear more as we get closer to the release date of ‘Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!’ on October 8th!

Well, that’s all of my favorites for this month. Please feel free to leave a comment with your favorites for this month as well as any suggestions of projects or topics you’d like to see me talk about- I’d love to hear from you!

Until next time!

Homemade Pico de Gallo: Kool or Katastrophy?

Happy Wednesday KorKers!

It’s been almost a month since I last posted, and a new post has been highly overdue. So, since July is almost over (WHOA!), I wanted to share with you, my readers, my homemade recipe of one of my favorite summer and anytime snacks- Pico de Gallo, also known as salsa fresca.

Pico de Gallo is a simple condiment, snack, and or topping that originates from Hispanic cuisine. It’s simple to make, delicious, and healthy to boot!

What you need to make it:

~A medium to large mixing bowl; cutting board; knife
~1 large onion (of your choosing- red or sweet onion, etc.) or 1 & ½ medium sized onions
~2-3 Jalapeños (depending on how much heat you want)
~3 or so sprigs of cilantro (the leaves and stems)
~½ of a lime
~2 large tomatoes or ~12-14 Roma tomatoes
~Crushed Oregano
[Makes about 1 Quart]

1- Cut up the onion, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapeños into bite size pieces and smaller. [Note- the seeds of the jalapeño give it their spicy kick! If you want your Pico de Gallo mild, take the seeds out.] Place them into a medium sized mixing bowl and gently mix together.

     2. Add a dash of oregano- enough to lightly cover the top of the Pico de Gallo.

Take the lime half and crush or squeeze it- adding the juice into the bowl until there is no more remaining. (Some of the lime pulp can be added into the bowl as well, if you want more of a lime flavor).
Gently stir the mixture until the Pico de Gallo mixed evenly. Then, grab some tortilla chips and dig in! It’s that simple!

I really love this recipe, and it can be improvised when it comes to making larger or smaller batches, and you can adjust the amounts of the ingredients to your personal taste.

Note: You can also place the Pico de Gallo into the fridge (for leftovers, etc.), but be warned- as it sits into a container, the flavors will continue to strengthen.

I hope you try this one out, and let me know what you think in the comments below!

If you have a suggestion for a future post, please leave it down in the comment box below, post it on the Facebook page, post it on KorK's suggestion page,  or email me at koolorkatastrophy@gmail.com!
